<link>http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12525/119</link>
Pastrana Flores, Gabriel Miguel
Even though the most diverse authors have recognized the enormous importance of religion in Mesoamerican social life, it is surprising to observe the lack of studies addressing the topic of the men who led the worship and most of the rituals. In this context the main purpose of this work is to conduct an initial study of the calpulli priesthood among Nahuatl speakers living in Mexico’s Central Highlands. It will also address information on state priesthood, and attempt to shed light on the general foundations for this religious institution among ancient Nahuatl peoples. In this work priesthood is defined by two perspectives: one is the study of the relationship between the sacred and the secular, and the other is the web of social relationships in which priesthood is inserted".

<title>El nahualismo</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12525/118</link>
<description>El nahualismo
In this book, one of the most complex and vague concepts in the Mesoamerican world view, the nahualli, is reconstructed. By means of a comparative analysis of data coming from colonial and contemporary sources from diverse indigenous peoples, it is possible to define what is constant in different nahualismos of Mesoamerica and to understand the notion of non-human co-essence as well as the idea of the man who is able to change his form at will. El nahualismo also shows the existence of a large cultural continuity that extends itselfs throughout time and space, from the ancient Olmecas to the modern psychic-mystic contemporary groups and from South America to Zacatecas and Durango. This work does not propose the existence of an immutable symbolic system but the idea that certain fundaments tend to survive in the very complex cultural dynamics related to the region here studied.

<link>http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12525/117</link>
The migration of the Mexicas—also known as Aztecs—, from their departure from the distant Aztlán until the foundation of their city-state—or altépetl— in México-Tenochtitlán, is one of the most well-known episodes in the pre-Hispanic history. However, there are less-known stories about the origins of the Mexicas which were told by other peoples such as the Chalcas, the Texcocanos, the Colhuas, and the inhabitants of Cuauhtitlán. Los orígenes de los pueblos indígenas del valle de México tells and analyses all these histories based on dozens of sources written during the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries and in which the indigenous and the Spanish authors used the ancient pictographic tradition as well as the new Latin alphabet. This work, then, permits to go beyond the traditional historical views that are focused only on the Mexicas and to show that during the Post-Classic the Valley of Mexico was a multi-ethnic mosaic composed of different altépetl that competed and fought for resources and lands but that also exchanged ideas, heritages, and religious symbols with which they constructed a shared cultural identity that was both Tolteca and Chichimeca. The book also offers a comprehensive interpretation of the linguistic and social functioning of the indigenous historical traditions and of their adaptation to the colonial circumstances. In doing so, this book also goes beyond the dichotomy between the mythical interpretations and the strictly historical readings of these traditions and shows how they combine the reference to the past with the constructions of ethnic identities in the present.

<link>http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12525/116</link>
Ángel María Garibay K. anticipated it very well in his prologue: “Un hecho es indudable. This book will not be consigned to oblivion”). There are eleven editions in Spanish of this book and some more in English, Russian, German, French, and Czech. Its central proposition is still being taken into account: in the pre-Hispanic Mexico —as the texts in Nahuatl here analysed show it— there were people who asked questions like these: can we say true words on Earth?, what comes after death?, what is time?, what do we know about divinity?, are we free?, and what is good and what is evil? Just as Mesoamerican art provokes great admiration, what we know about Mesoamerican literature and thought heightens the esteem for the indigenous people —the ones from the past and the ones from the present—, creators and keepers of a cultural universe.
