<title>Los Popolocas</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12525/9930</link>
<description>Los Popolocas
León, Nicolás
This ethnographic study, based on an expedition carried out between 1904 and 1905, presents an in-depth investigation into the Popoloca Indians, an indigenous group previously scarcely documented. The author addresses the ethnic affiliation of the Popolocas, highlighting the confusion and scarcity of information in ancient chronicles and previous works. Through anthropological, philological, and archaeological analysis, the kinship of the Popolocas with the Chuchones and Mixtecs is demonstrated, concluding that they belong to the same ethnic family. Their pre-Columbian and current geographical location is described, along with their cultural decline due to isolation and Nahua domination, evidenced by the loss of customs and knowledge, as well as the degeneration of their language and living conditions. The study also details their main economic activities, such as pottery and textile production, and emphasizes the importance of women in their society. Archaeological findings, such as pyramidal structures and pottery similar to Mixtec ones, are presented, and a Chuchón codex sharing style with Mixtec codices is analyzed. Finally, the author suggests that the epithet "Popoloca" (stammerer, barbarian) was given by the Mexica due to their isolation and consequent cultural regression; Este estudio etnográfico, basado en una expedición realizada entre 1904 y 1905, presenta una investigación profunda sobre los indios Popolocas, un grupo indígena previamente poco documentado.
